Tightly curled hair cut to keep its volume and spring

Why is a curly haircut different?

A curly haircut is different because curls shrink as they dry and every section has its own spring. A classic blunt cut, designed for straight hair, often leaves curly hair uneven. At Boucles Addict Studio, the shape is built by looking at your curls the way they actually fall.

The same head of hair can shrink by 30 to 70% between wet and dry. Cutting two centimetres off stretched-out hair can mean losing a lot more once the curls spring back. That’s the cause of most bad salon experiences.

So the cut is done with scissors, curl by curl, to balance the volume, frame the face and create a shape that stays beautiful day after day.

Should curly hair be cut wet or dry?

At Boucles Addict Studio, curly hair is usually cut dry, in its natural shape, so each curl can be seen at its true length. On very tight coils (4B, 4C), a blowout may be done before the cut to even out the ends precisely. The method is chosen together with you.

Cutting dry avoids unpleasant surprises caused by shrinkage. A blowout, on the other hand, shows the full length of coily hair so only the damaged ends are removed. Either way, we talk it through at the start of your appointment.

What haircut should I get for my curl type?

The right cut depends on your curl type, your density and how you wear your hair day to day. 3A and 3B curls love soft layers, 3C and 4A curls a rounded shape, and 4B and 4C coils a cut that works with their volume and protects the ends.

  • 3A and 3B: light layers for movement without losing length.
  • 3C and 4A: a round, balanced shape that shows off tight spirals.
  • 4B and 4C: a cut that follows your natural volume and removes fragile ends.

Round face: a little more volume on top and length that falls below the chin helps elongate the face. Fine hair: minimal layering, to keep fullness. Thick hair: internal layers lighten the bulk without breaking the shape.

How do I ask my hairdresser for a curly haircut?

To ask for a curly haircut, bring two or three reference photos and talk about the length you want once your hair is dry. At Boucles Addict Studio, every appointment starts with a short consultation to understand your curls, your habits and the look that feels like you.

Feel free to mention what you didn’t like about past haircuts: it’s genuinely useful information.

How much is a curly haircut in Montreal?

At Boucles Addict Studio in Montreal, a haircut for curly or coily hair starts at $85. It starts at $125 with curl definition and $100 with a blowout. A kids’ cut starts at $50 and a men’s cut starts at $65.

Prices vary with length, density and curl type. For a cut on pressed hair, see our cut and silk press package.

Why are curly haircuts more expensive?

A curly haircut costs more because it takes more time and precision: 1 hr 30 min to 2 hr, compared with 30 to 45 minutes for a standard cut. The work is done section by section, after careful prep and a close look at every curl.

How often should curly hair be cut?

Curly hair is generally cut every 8 to 12 weeks. To keep a precise shape, aim for every 8 weeks. If you’re growing your hair out, stretch it to 12 weeks and only remove the damaged ends. Regular cuts limit breakage and tangles on tight curls.

Between appointments, good moisture makes all the difference: here is how to care for your cut between appointments.

How long does the appointment take?

At Boucles Addict Studio, a curly haircut takes about 1 hr 30 min. Allow 2 hr with curl definition, and 3 hr with a silk press or twists. That time covers a consultation, a precise cut section by section and tips for your routine at home.

Will I lose a lot of length?

Not unless you want to. Before cutting, Bianca explains how much your curls shrink and shows you the length that will come off. The cut is done in stages: the minimum comes off first, then you decide together whether to take off more. You stay in control of your length from start to finish.

What our clients say

“Thank you Bianca for bringing my curls back to life.” A client review on Setmore.

Do you cut kids’ and men’s hair?

Yes. Boucles Addict Studio cuts kids’ hair from age 6 or 7, gently and without pulling. Kids’ cuts start at $50. Men with curly hair are welcome too: cuts are done with scissors only, with the same care for the curls, no clippers and no barbershop fade.

For younger clients, see our kids’ curly haircuts and how their appointment works.

How should I prepare my hair before the cut?

Before your cut, come in with clean, detangled hair styled the way you usually wear it, with no tight bun and no heavy gel. That way Bianca can see your curls in their natural shape. Bring a few reference photos too, and plan for 1 hr 30 min for a cut on its own.

Your first cut at Boucles Addict?

The Signature Experience (3 hr, $215) is designed for a first visit: a full assessment of your hair, a treatment, a cut, definition and a PDF routine to take home. To learn more, meet Bianca and the studio.
